END-OF-LIFE CARE

How to know when it may be time to say goodbye

A calm guide to thinking about quality of life and how to talk with your veterinarian.

Deciding when to say goodbye is one of the hardest parts of loving a pet. There is no single answer. The notes below are general guidance to help you think it through, not medical advice.

Think about quality of life

Many veterinarians and hospice providers use simple frameworks to think about quality of life. They tend to consider things like comfort, mobility, appetite, hygiene, and the number of good days versus difficult days.

Talk with your veterinarian

Your veterinarian is your best partner here. They can help you understand what your pet is experiencing and what options are available, including hospice care and in-home euthanasia.

Consider in-home euthanasia

If the time comes, many families find peace in having their pet pass at home, in a familiar place, surrounded by people who love them. Mobile veterinarians can often coordinate aftercare so you do not need to travel.

Lean on support

Whatever you decide, you do not have to carry this alone. Pet loss counselors and grief support groups can help.
